How Many Times Should You Try IVF Treatment?

Healthy couples achieve pregnancy either with IUI method or ovulation induction treatment about 20% or a little more in a month. These treatments can be tried 3 or 4 times, but most pregnancies are obtained in the first months of treatment. Insisting the treatment more than 4 times will not increase the chance of getting pregnancy, for these situations, IVF will be the choice of treatment.

In order to reach a happy end in IVF treatment, it is necessary to believe to treatment without any despair. When pregnancy cannot be achieved in the first trial, it should not be given up. In some couples IVF treatment is not a one-time treatment, pregnancies are achieved after a few attempts.

The success rates of IVF treatment are increasing with the development of new methods and techniques. Therefore, if pregnancy cannot be achieved in the first attempt, the couples should have to try more IVF cycles.

What is the average number of IVF attempts before success?

In IVF treatment most women typically see success rates of 35-45% per cycle but the chance of conceiving in a month varies according to the age of the woman, and it can reach up to 50-60%.

The cumulative effect of 4 full cycles of IVF increases the chances of a successful pregnancy up to 70-90%. The chance of getting pregnant increases parallel with the number of trials in couples who do not have a specific problem.

If unsuccessful attempts affect the couples negatively, it may be necessary to interrupt or even stop the trials. However, there are couples who can have their babies with IVF treatment after many trials.

What is the age limit for IVF treatment?

In Vitro Fertilization treatment can be done if the woman has not gone through menopause. Although there is no real age limit for women undergoing IVF, many women in their 40s have not high positive results. Between the ages of 40 and 44 having a baby chance is approximately a ten percent through IVF.

What are the factors that reduce the chances of getting pregnant in IVF treatment?

The most important factor that determine the success rate in IVF treatment is the correct diagnosis, correct patient selection and application of appropriate treatment methods rather than the number of trials.

The age of the couple, the duration of infertility, the male factor, obtaining high quality embryos, considering all the additional problems in men and women before starting treatment and the experience of the doctor are the most important factors affecting the success.

These appear as factors that can negatively affect the success of IVF treatment:

  • Women age 35 and over,
  • Poor ovarian reserve,
  • Hydrosalpinx in tubes,
  • Thin inner layer of womb (thin endometrium) during treatment cycle,
  • Presence of endometriosis cysts or fibroids,
  • Severe sperm problems,
  • Smoking,
  • Being overweight,
  • Long duration of marriage,
  • Recurrent IVF failures.

How to increase the success rate of trials in IVF treatment?

After unsuccessful attempts in IVF treatment, the chance may gradually decrease in repeated treatments. Therefore, before starting a new treatment cycle, all factors that may cause failure should be investigated in detail:

  • All abnormalities that may prevent the adherence of the embryo to the womb such as intrauterine adhesions, fibroids or polyps should be corrected by hysteroscopy method.
  • When fallopian tube is occluded, a fluid accumulates inside the tubes and this fluid prevents embryos from adhering to the womb. This condition, called hydrosalpinx, is diagnosed with ultrasonography or uterine film (HSG-hysterosalpingography). This fluid flowing into the uterine cavity and preventing the embryos from adhering is prevented by closing the part of the tubes close to the uterus by laparoscopy method or surgically removing the tubes.
  • The other factors that prevent embryo development and attachment to the uterus are hormonal disorders such as thyroid gland diseases, increase in milk hormone (prolactin) secreted from the pituitary gland in the brain. These should be investigated and treated with drugs before starting IVF treatment.
  • Polycystic ovarian disease and the increase in insulin hormone may cause difficulty to conceive and may lead to miscarriages. For this reason, the chance of getting pregnancy can be increased by administering diabetes drugs that reduce insulin resistance. Losing weight would be of great benefit
  • Congenital or acquired problems related to the immune and coagulation system should be investigated by performing advanced blood tests and their treatment should be provided with the use of appropriate drugs when needed.
  • Detailed sperm analysis should be done. Genetic tests (such as chromosome analysis, Y chromosome microdeletion test, sperm FISH test) should be performed if there is a severe decrease in the number, motility, or the morphology in the sperm. If a problem is detected in these tests, sperm cell selection, Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) (genetic examination and diagnosis to embryos) techniques should be used in a new IVF treatment.

Which methods are used to increase the success rate of trials in IVF treatment?

  • Hysteroscopy and hysteroscopic surgery,
  • Removal of hydrosalpinx by laparoscopy,
  • Micro-TESE,
  • Assisted Hatching (AHA),
  • Blastocyst transfer,
  • Embryo freezing,
  • PRP (Platelet rich plasma),
  • Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

As conclusion, pregnancy is usually achieved on first IVF attempts but sometimes repeated trials may be required. The important thing is to identify all problems that may prevent success before starting treatment and help you to hold your baby in your arms with minimum financial and moral fatigue.  An experienced doctor together with a high technology and high standard IVF laboratory, will increase the chance of IVF treatment success.
